As with everything, fashion isn’t reinvented it’s just repeated and this summer is the year we’ll all be wearing our trunks at new heights. Cream on Crown in Surry Hills and Newtown and their neighbour C’s Flashback have brought out a large range of colorful and patterned vintage shorts for swimming that resemble a style previously worn by men of an earlier generation.

You know the look…they sit above the hips and are well above the knee, usually paired with extremely slick hair and a chiseled body.

In the 1940’s-1970’s men’s swimwear took major leaps in the design stakes and changed drastically from the one and two-piece tank and trunk style garments that were fashioned at the time, to a simple pair of swimmers I can only describe as being somewhere between speedo and general pants style board shorts.

Walking along the beach last weekend, I happened to see a few men sporting these looks, and they weren’t the crowd you’d find in a Surry Hills vintage store. I walked up to one of them and asked where he got his shorts, he said, “ASOS”. Imagine my shock – ASOS are a global fashion website constantly setting the trends with their clothes – so the fact that their 2015/16 summer range is saturated with these vintage looking shorts means that it is well and truly time to jump on the bandwagon.
